The capital of Arkansas is Little Rock, where the first European explorers traveled. This is where they first met the Quapaw Indians, where the name Arkansas came from. Then, while on expedition, La Sallearrived at "La Petite Roche" where the "little Rock" rested by the banks of the river. Several expeditions followed by the French and Spanish with not many settling there. Even in 1819, when Arkansas became a territory, Little Rock was still just an untamed wilderness. One of the early settlers of Arkansas was Hernando De Soto in the mid-16th century, but leave it to a Frenchman, Henri de Tonti, to find the first settlement in 1686. In 1803 the U.S. purchased the area as part of the Louisiana Purchase. As the years went by, the cotton industry developed and plantations sprouted up everywhere. It was in 1861 that Arkansas entered the Confederacy. Arkansas was the 25th state in the U.S. and became a state on June 15, 1836.
