In 1803 the U.S. purchased the area as part of the Louisiana Purchase. As the years went by, the cotton industry developed and plantations sprouted up everywhere. It was in 1861 that Arkansas entered the Confederacy. Arkansas was the 25th state in the U.S. and became a state on June 15, 1836.

There are many rivers that run through the state of Arkansas, like the White River, the Red River, Saint Francis and the biggest, the Arkansas River. Most of these rivers offer rafting and boating. White water rafting has become very popular. Business is booming in this sport with women becoming more involved.
